    *I don’t see a point to renting for say $3,000/month and you’ll never own it. Why not live outside NYC and commute to the city when needed? I don’t know maybe I’m old fashion but I believe in ZERO debt. My house is completely paid for, my car is paid for, I don’t use electricity I went solar, I don’t own any credit cards etc... all people would be happier if they lived the way I do. All you’re doing by living in NYC is making the landlords fatter and richer*

    down south you walk up to the apartment or house fill out the application then they call you three days later to come get the keys.... What's with all of this broker shit for an apartment?.. Are you kidding me?.... They treat you guys like that because you allow it. Stop thinking it's the best place on earth and start looking around the country because they're are fucking you guys left, right and sideways!!... Then make you live in all the bullshit with no right to bear arms!! lol.... say what you want about the South but they got it right on this one from Atlanta all the way to Florida cause the rats in New York have taken up residency and ain't going nowhere!!!...Love visiting though.

    • @mattznyc
      @mattznyc 7 років тому

      I've lived in Georgia and Dallas too and you are right that is much easier there. It isn't so much that we "allow" them to do it, it is just how the market works. When the demand far outweighs the demand those with the product win! Just capitalism. But it is changing recently- more people renting apartments with no fee etc. But yeah, it is a total scam, so you either do it and live here or you don't. Well, you don't really need a gun in NYC, and trust me, with 8 million people packed together you don't it. My favorite place I lived was Dallas

    • @tracys7754
      @tracys7754 9 років тому

      +Divine Domino Have tons of money. This video was done back in 06'. As of now, a tiny studio is going to run you $2,000 minimum, and that's if you're really lucky to find one at that price. Even splitting a place with roommates ( which is much smarter ), you're still going to spend around $1,200-$1,500 at minimum on rent.

  • @anastasia10017

    Just know that you will lose 50% of your paycheck to taxes. All those affordable indian, delis etc that he is talking about are all GONE and replaced with Starbucks. You cant even find a decent bagel or pizza in the city anymore. Also a studio is more like $2000 in the outer boroughs. Subway is now $112/month. your electricity bill in the summer jumps to $400 /mth due to running the airconditioner. the average apartment rent in nyc is now $3200 and it goes up at the end of your lease. the average price to buy an apartment is $1.5 million - and that is for a tiny apartment. True you dont spend much time in your apartment because there is a lot to do -- but not as much as before because all the interesting creative people have been priced out. So you will spend most of your time working. Just average stuff like going to the movies is expensive -- $15 movie tickets, $10 popcorn... taxis used to be cheap -- now unaffordable. NYC is not the way it used to be. it is very difficult to live here now.

I have thinking about if NY is a possible place to move, but I'm starting to think that its more of a "visiting place" than a "living place". • @princessnicki63

      You shouldn't worry too much about it. It's not like everything is a billion dollars, and living comfortably definitely IS possible. It is a great place to live. I think a lot of people who visit only see Times Square and that area.. and that IS big, crowded, and expensive, but once you are in more residential areas, like Brooklyn it is really nice. Of course it will be more expensive than other places in the US, but that is the same for any big city like Paris, London. If you like the lifestyle, it is worth it.!

  • @avq5

    Here's part of the problem - NYC has a long history of rent-control. This drives up prices by creating an artificial shortage. Also, the 25 year tax abatement doesn't help matters. It drives up costs for developers which translates into higher rents.

    • @carlwilson2488
      @carlwilson2488 10 років тому

      This is a common myth. The problem with rents in NYC is that there is a glut of "luxury" bldgs. going up that are rented by students or post grads that suck up the ridiculous costs bc they're only here for two or three yrs & chalk it up to "the NY experience". Each of these bldgs. cause a ripple effect - every other bldg. in the area suddenly decides that they also will jack up their rents bc they're in close proximity to this "luxury" bldg. It has absolutely nothing to do with rent stabilization.

    • @avq5
      @avq5 10 років тому

      Carl Wilson There's nothing mythological about the laws of supply and demand, unless of course you don't understand them.

    • @carlwilson2488
      @carlwilson2488 10 років тому

      The theory that rent stabilization creates an "artificial shortage of housing" is mythological. Real Estate developers that contribute to the overabundance of hyper expensive units create an artificially expensive rental mkt. That's a major part of a very complex & important issue.

    Hey how are the jobs in New York? Are there a lot of jobs or anything?

    • @mattznyc
      @mattznyc 10 років тому

      I think the job market is competitive in NYC because of the number of people, but the unemployment rate usually is a bit lower. If you are in a good field like finance, IT, nursing, etc. the opportunities hould be pretty good. The jobs tend to pay higher, but I think the problem is NYC is that unless you have a pretty decent professional job, it is hard to get by. I am not sure how people with jobs at Starbucks, Barnes and Noble etc. get by. The minimum wage in NYC is the same as the rest of the country and you can't get by on it.

      Matt Zimmerman I guess they have more than one job and get a lot of tips. Here in Helsinki, Finland housing is very expensive as well. I have a 3 bedroom 957sqft student apartment and I pay $1500 and that is the student price. The regular price would be double as much. A studio apartment here would be easily $1100 if you are not a student. And the prices keep getting higher. I think everyone is trying to move to more populated areas because of the many promised opportunities. It's not always as simple as they think though.

    If you're looking for a cheap apartment, Queens is a great, and safe place to live. Some parts of Queens like Astoria, is a lot like Manhattan.

    I have been looking at renting apartments in NYC and most sites say around $2000. Is this per month?
